Department of Nutrition

Background and History

Nutrition is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of human. A poor nutrition and diet can cause deficiency diseases such as anemia; health-threatening conditions like obesity and cancer; and chronic systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. As a result, nutrition science is considered as one of the important basic and clinical sciences in the field of medicine and has an independent department and even faculty in prestigious medical universities.

In 2011, the Departmant of Nutrition was established at the Faculty of Medicine in Kashan University of Medical Sciences. The Department has trained students for the BSc. degree in nutrition science since 2012. Recently, with the approval of the specialty Board of Nutrition, the Department has received a license for educating postgraduate students and will offer MSc. degree in nutrition science from September 2017. In the short time since the establishment of the Department, more than 150 research projects have been conducted and about 160 research articles have been published in prestigious internal and external scientific journals by the members of this Department.



The mission of the Department of Nutrition at Kashan University of Medical Sciences is to improve public health nutrition, prevent chronic diseases and design the research projects that their findings will solve nutritional problems of the community. The Department strives to accomplish this aim through following objectives:

1.      Training students for BSc. degree in Nutritioin Science

2.      Training students for MSc. degree in Nutrition Science

3.      Training postgraduate students for Ph.D By Research in the field of nutrition

4.      Educating basic and clinical nutrition to undergraduate medical students.

5.      Designing and conducting research projects aimed to increase understanding of how diet and nutrients influence health at molecular, clinical and population levels

6.      Planning/Designing research projects in collaboration with industries

7.      Planning Scientific Symposiums/Seminars in the field of nutrition science

8.      Organizing nutrition education workshops for university and community members
